Short Story Spotlight: Being Elizabeth
As I outlined in my last post, I have a lot of short stories that I am beginning to tweak in preparation for publication. Without giving too much away, I'm going to start describing some of my stories in a little more detail so that you know what to expect when the time comes.
The first story in my GHOST or HORROR collection is called Being Elizabeth.
In this bit of micro fiction (the word limit was 250!), we learn how difficult our main character, an eleven-year-old girl named Charlotte, finds the way everyone favors her twin sister, Elizabeth, over her. Despite being identical, there is a clear favorite, and it's definitely not Charlotte.
The girls like to play a game to trick their parents which involves seeing how long they can go pretending to be each other before someone notices. On the day the story begins, Charlotte is convincing Elizabeth to play this game just one more time, even though they are starting to grow out of it.
What happens next? What role does the ghostly voice that whispers to Charlotte from the shadows play in all this? No spoilers! You'll learn more when I publish this story alongside some others.
I have a few changes to make. For one, I want to lengthen the story to explore the ideas in more detail. For another, the judges who read my story provided some EXCELLENT advice for improving it that I want to implement before I move forward. But, if you're intrigued by the idea, why not try your hand at guessing the ending in the comments below?
