Earthquake House: Grace and Alchemy--What is it even about?
Some of you have heard about my new work, Earthquake House, but apart from the brave few who have helped me out by reading my early drafts, you might be a bit lost as to what it is actually about. Since I am already entering the book into contests and hope to begin agent hunting this year, I feel comfortable sharing the brief synopsis I have written for the story:
Synopsis: Earthquake House: Grace and Alchemy
In the heart of Grodoch lies the Valley, and in the middle of the Valley rests a House. From the outside it is big, but unassuming, its large windows keeping a careful eye on the town. The inside, however, is a little. . .different. There are no windows, for example. The House is clearly only two floors high if you look at it from the street, but inside it could be anything from six, to twenty, to a thousand, depending on the House’s mood. The earthquakes that shake the Valley, and give the House its name, also cause it to change.
And let’s not forget the doors, for Earthquake House is full of them. They change too, as do the Worlds that lurk beyond.
When GRACE CHARITY flees her rigid, highly structured life in the city of Illumina on the plains, she finds herself in the Valley where magic runs rampant, houses go wandering when it takes their fancy, and absolutely no one knows how to follow the Way of the Illuminated. The House soon claims her, as it does many intrepid travelers, and Grace has to face myriad dangers in many worlds that threaten to kill her and, even worse, change her mind. ALCHEMY, the House’s strange owner and committed Avoider of Responsibility, must face the truth of the Magic’s decline and accept that they, and only they, hold the power to reverse it. . .and that the annoying little Charity from Illumina is the one who will help them do it. When Grace realizes that the magic she has been raised to abhor seems to be dying, she has to make a choice: help the degenerates reclaim the Magic, or return home and face the consequences of her rebellion. And Alchemy must choose between utter, peaceful oblivion, and facing up and taking care of the world(s) they created.
EARTHQUAKE HOUSE: GRACE AND ALCHEMY is an adult fantasy set in the fictional land of Grodoch where any imaginable world might be only a threshold away.
