Writing Update: Earthquake House

My main project, Earthquake House (read more here), is going extremely well. This week, I finished v5, and now only v6 stands between me and agent hunting. Without giving too much away, here are some of the things I need to work on:

  • Reviewing the first 50 pages to ensure that they, on their own, grab a reader's attention. Agents usually request between 5 and 50 pages from authors who query them, and I want to be ready.
  • In the v5 rewrite, I added some new information that I need to ensure is reflected consistently throughout the book. These changes are all for the better, however, and I don't anticipate this task taking too long.
  • Chapters moved and changed in v5, and I need to ensure that the new order they appear in makes chronological sense.
  • One of my characters is a house (do with that information what you will) and I need to spend a little more time on the scenes written from this character's POV.
  • Chapters were combined, and now some of them are VERY long--I need to see how these read and whether they need to be split up.
  • Similarly, there are now some extremely short chapters that might no longer be needed or that can be absorbed into others.
  • Scene and character descriptions are a weak point for me, so I want to take one last pass at the book with this in mind before agent hunting.

If this looks like a long list to you, that's because it is. However, after the v5 edits I just went through, this will be easy. It always takes me longer to make edits than I think it will, though, so, while I hope to finish v6 over the holidays, we will all have to wait and see what really happens.

As always, I ask you to wish me luck!
